Javor Gardev is a broadly recognized Bulgarian director, holder of numerous theatre awards. He has created a significant number of artworks of different kinds of productions – theatre performances interdisciplinary projects such as video and art performances, has directed radioplays and acoustic productions for radio, earning international acclaim.
His artistic search focuses on contemporary dramaturgy, as well as on interpreting classic dramaturgy with the means and aesthetic codes of contemporary pop-culture. His stagings often employ radical, unconventional solutions and experiment with theatre space, with the effect of visual media and the actors/audience composition.
One of his most interesting and successful works for theatre are “Bastard”, set in the unconventional space of an underground wine cellar in Varna, the multimedia mega-project “Marat/Sade” and “The Pillowman” in which he encloses the scenic action in a “cabin” and the spectators observe from different points of view through a glass barrier what is happening there. All the three performances have been included in the program of ITF “Varna Summer”. Main collaborator in his work is the set designer Nikola Toromanov.
Javor Gardev has realized different projects in Germany, France, Turkey etc. In the last few years he works periodically with the artistic troupe of Varna Drama Theatre.“Krum” is one of his newest premieres. He renews the interest to the popular and proclaimed to be scandalous Israeli contemporary classic playwright Hanoh Levin on Bulgarian stage. The play recreates in fragmental and tragicomic way the life in an isolated suburban society. Javor Gardev compresses at utmost the space between stage and spectators and manages to convey the feeling of narrowness and dead-lock of the personages to the audience, situated in immediate proximity to the actors.
One of the provocative performances of the season! In “Krum” I am interested why people in this suburb actually do not do what they want. Why do they want to leave their country and why do they think that there, abroad, the things will go well and here – not.
