Martin MacDonaugh is one of the most affirmed young playwrights in contemporary European drama. “The Pillowman” is a provocative and intense theatre thriller that unravels the conflict between the intelligence services and a writer, whose terrifying stories about murders of children come true. The Bulgarian premiere of the play took place at the last year festival’s edition and the staging turned out to be an event of the season. Winner of the UBA’s award 2005 for best set design, it is nominated also for UBA’s 2005 award for best directing and best actor (Stoyan Radev). Winner of “Askeer” 2005 award for best set design and another 4 nominations for “Askeer” 2005 for best actor in a leading role (Penko Gospodinov), best actor in a supporting role (Stoyan Radev), best directing and best performance.
What I like most in this play is that it deals with an extremely topical issue – the interaction between the world of imagination and the real world and the modes of this interaction… Do we have direct, real relationship with the world or we rely only on the fact that the world is brought to us by a kind of medium that digests it, before serving it to us?
Javor Gardev
The performance of Drama theatre – Varna is a successful combination of intelligent contemporary directing and original contemporary play.
