Margarita Mladenova has created one of the most insightful and profound stagings of Chekhov’s plays in Bulgarian theatre. “The Seagull” is of a great significance in her biography as a director. In 1989 with a kind of manifesto – staging namely on this play in co-authorship with Ivan Dobchev they opened the Theatre workshop “Sfumato”. In 1995 they organized together a workshop with French actors on the same play in Theatre Paris Villet. And in 1996 their performance on the “Cherry Orchard” with French actors participated in the Avignon Theatre Festival. Margaria Mladenova’s long-term interest in the works of the great Russian dramatist culminates in a performance that promises an unique theatre experience

“Make them raise this curtain, it looks pretty ridiculous this way” – says Dorn after the flop of Treplyov’s performance.
“The Seagull” at Varna theatre follows Konstantin’s poetic attempt to raise the curtain between here-now and there-ever, between meteorology and metaphysics, and from “there” to set a measure for the life “here”. Without this fourth dimension we “loose the measure” of being, our intuition for predestination becomes stunted, our souls fall ill. Our “self” dies before our actual death – and “the doctor is missing”.
